Climate Change affecting Coral Reefs affecting Humans

Climate Change affecting Coral Reefs Photo credit: am very interested in learning more about how climate change that I am helping to cause is affecting living organisms that I have never seen in person. Which unfortunately for me makes it too easy to just ignore – out of sight, out of mind.

I have never seen coral reefs in person however I am learning how much they impact everyday life of sea creatures that depend on them for breeding and thus survival. People have been exploiting these organisms as decorations for their home, loofahs in their bath, and using in fish tanks at home.

Affects of Temperature

“The warmer air and ocean surface temperatures brought on by climate change impact corals and alter coral reef communities by prompting coral bleaching events and altering ocean chemistry. These impacts affect corals and the many organisms that use coral reefs as habitat.”

Climate change is the greatest global threat to coral reef ecosystems. Scientific evidence now clearly indicates that the Earth’s atmosphere and ocean are warming, and that these changes are primarily due to greenhouse gases derived from human activities.”
