Almost the entire world is at my fingertips through social media, if only I had all the time in the world to enjoy it.

My greatest joy is logging into Instagram every day and searching for my daughter’s account in sheer hope that she has posted an update about how she is doing. This social media platform allows me to slip between timelines and relish pictures and words my daughter has posted as recently as this morning or from years ago. Feeling connected with my daughter in this way helps to calm the swell of fear that often rears its ugly head when I haven’t heard from her in a while.

Instagram Social Media using instragramhas also been a useful business tool for a local shop owner I know in Fuquay-Varina. She started using this marketing platform a few months ago and has already built a small but very faithful following.  Instagram allows her to reach her target audience of women between 20-50 years of age who are in her local area and enjoy shopping for the type of products she sells.

My personal favorite business social media tool is Twitter.  Twitter connects me with a wide range of people from all around the world who share similar interests with me. Some of these interests include: writing books (Francine Jay), publishing books (Lulu), building businesses that benefit people, planet and profit (B Corporations), and business sustainability (BSC). Twitter has introduced me to a world of business leaders, influencers and innovators.

using social media for researchAnytime I need a fresh new idea for arranging my living room, organizing my closet, creating a fun dish for a party, or how to decorate for a birthday I turn to Pinterest. Without fail, I am always humbled by the genius that can be found on board after board of brilliant Pinterest users.

A vast but temperamental tool that provides reviews, location updates, and current events is Facebook. After searching on google for information about a business or a person I turn to Facebook to learn about more current and relevant information. I refer to Facebook as temperamental because of its many opportunities that cause me to get lost in wonder after viewing an interesting picture, then a cute cat video and then a funny rendition of Mother May I by a group of strangers. Getting lost in social media is fine as long as that was my initial plan. However, when I look up two hours instead of the few minutes I had planned for when looking up a quick address, I know I have been sucked into the black hole also known as, Facebook.

Using Social Media for Public Relations or Marketing

I believe social media is a very important tool for anyone wanting to reach a wider audience of people who share an interest in their ideas, services or products. The opportunities social media provides to consumers and producers is only limited by the communication practitioners imagination.

It is key for public relations staff to understand who uses the different types of social media and why they are using it. Twitter is a rapid fire way to communicate through words and pictures to a large group of people in a funny or serious manner. From my own personal experience, the Twitter world seems to be used by with men and women ranging in age from 25 to 75 years of age from all over the world. Instagram is an amazing tool to share ideas by speaking through pictures with supportive text. Instagram seems to be used by mostly women ranging in age from 16 to 65 years of age from all over the world. Facebook is a widely used social platform that individuals use as a personal space to share intimate information and as a tool to gather information about products and services they are interested in.

Using social media as a tool to share information is most successful when the information being shared is timely, easily available, leads the reader to more information or causes a productive reaction from the recipient. In order for us to know a tool is accomplishing the goals we have set forward, we need to be able to track it. Each of the social media platforms understand this needs and each one has compensated with its own analytics system.
